GoodSync is an affordable utility that provides all the tools you need to keep your data safe and up-to-date. GoodSync is straightforward and user-friendly—it forgoes a graphically detailed user interface and gimmickry for pure functionality. Whether you’re simply looking to backup your data to protect it from crashes or need to synchronize data on a network, GoodSync makes it easy to keep you data current and safe with a minimum of hassle. We were impressed with the program’s barebones design and simplicity. As far as sync software goes, GoodSync is an all-around good bet.

Standout Features

  • Backup and bi-directional sync capability
  • Synchronize data via FTP, WebDAV and Amazon S3
  • Archives modified files
  • Backup to USB drives, external hard drives and discs

Features:   Excellent

GoodSync was designed with automation in mind. There’s no reason to manually transfer and backup your important documents, spreadsheets, images and media. After configuring GoodSync and creating sync or backup profiles, the program runs itself and executes automatically. Scheduled syncs and backups can be configured to run at intervals of your choosing. By creating multiple profiles it is possible to schedule syncs for more time sensitive data every evening and a more comprehensive backup and sync at the end of every week.

GoodSync has a number of safety measures in place to ensure that you don’t accidentally overwrite data or senselessly duplicate files. In the event that a file is modified on two different computers, GoodSync will not overwrite either version, instead, the program will log the event as a conflict and will require you to manually combine the differing files.

Because GoodSync is not capable of synchronizing or merging Microsoft Outlook files it is probably not an ideal candidate for many office environments.

Ease of Use:   Excellent

Everyone from small business owners to students working on multiple machines will feel comfortable using GoodSync. All you have to do to conduct a sync with GoodSync is select a source file or folder and indicate a destination. The program is visually and logistically very similar to the standard Windows Explorer. To schedule automated syncs and backups you simply create a sync job and indicate the desired interval between syncs under the options tab.

Support and Documentation:   Excellent

GoodSync is easy to use, but working over networks can be wrought with obstacles that require professional tech support. Happily, GoodSync provides thorough documentation and useful resources for sorting out any problems you might encounter. Their FAQs are thorough and address everything from licensing to automating sync jobs. GoodSync’s site also includes a tutorial, manual and access to twenty-four hour tech support.

Summary:

For everyday tasks like backing up data and synchronizing your data on multiple machines, you couldn’t ask for a better program than GoodSync. The strength of the program rests in its minimalist design and its emphasis on functionality. The fact that it doesn’t work with Outlook and lacks some of the advanced features professional users expect, however, qualify this otherwise stellar sync software. To see how GoodSync compares to other leading sync software, be sure to read our reviews of Syncables, SugarSync and Laplink PCsync.
